Welcoming Rabbi Michaela Brown

28 May 2024

Dear friends,

We are delighted to introduce our new Associate Chaplain for Jewish and Interfaith Life, Rabbi Michaela Brown! She will begin her work at Carleton on July 29th, in addition to assuming a similar role at St. Olaf.

We invite you to read her bio below to learn more about her:

Rav Michaela Brown (she/her) is so excited to serve as the Associate Chaplain for Jewish and Interfaith Life at Carleton College. Rav Michaela is coming to Northfield from Boston, MA, where she just received her rabbinic ordination from Hebrew College, a pluralistic rabbinical school based in Newton, MA. While in Boston, she worked for a number of local institutions, including Temple Beth Avodah and Temple Israel of Boston, as well as national organizations, like the Jewish Women’s Archive, BBYO, and Moishe House. She was born and raised in Northern VA and received her BA in Jewish Studies with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Virginia. Rav Michaela is passionate about connecting Jewish traditions to modern questions, particularly surrounding ideas of justice and identity. She loves learning and teaching Talmud and Kabbalah, singing both Jewish and secular music, and reminding people there is no one way to be Jewish.

In her role, Rabbi Michaela will serve Carleton’s entire Jewish community, including students, staff, faculty, alumni, and parents. She will lead weekly Shabbat and Jewish text study, as well as major holiday services, in addition to serving as a Rabbinic counselor and educator on campus. Rabbi Michaela joins a growing Chapel team, as well as the growing Division of Inclusion, Equity, and Community.

Should you have any questions or would like to be part of the team that helps transition and welcome Rabbi Michaela to Carleton, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We look forward to a new year together!

Warmly,

Rev. Schuyler Vogel
College Chaplain
